About Dr. Shadee Elmasry

Dr. Shadee Elmasry is a renowned Islamic scholar, educator, and speaker, deeply committed to reviving traditional Islamic education in the modern Western context. He currently serves as the Scholar in Residence and Director of Education at the New Brunswick Islamic Center (NBIC) in New Jersey. He is also the founder and head of Safina Society, an institution dedicated to disseminating traditional Islamic knowledge both in-person and online.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Elmasry embarked on his Islamic studies at the age of eighteen, traveling to countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Morocco to learn from esteemed scholars. He holds a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from The George Washington University and a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of London (SOAS), where his doctoral research focused on the daʿwa methodology of Imam ʿAbd Allah bin ʿAlawi al-Haddad.

Dr. Elmasry has taught at several academic institutions, including Yale University, SOAS, Trinity College, Hartford Seminary, and Manhattanville College. His scholarly work bridges classical Islamic sciences with contemporary issues, making him a sought-after speaker for conferences, seminars, and community events.

Through Safina Society, Dr. Elmasry offers programs like UWAYLIM, designed for adults committed to a scholarly journey in faith and learning. He also hosts “The Safina Society Podcast,” where he addresses a wide range of topics, from theology and spirituality to current social issues.
